Event Report; Langfords Hotel

After having heard reports from other small hi-fi events where only two or three people turn up, I approached Fridays event with some trepidation. I needn’t have worried; despite the cold and the rain, the central location we chose ensured this event was well attended. In fact, we even managed to poach some people from the concurrent event in the hotel.

As people were filing in, we were using a pair of Classics. I knew it was going to be a good night when a lady commented on the pair that was playing. Unfamiliar with my loudspeakers, this person was impressed that the big ones sounded so good. When I pointed out that it was the small ones that were playing, I was rewarded with an incredulous look.

I gave a quick presentation about the Caterthuns, then introduced Adrian and his awesome electronics. At this point I connected the Caterthun 8 loudspeakers and started playing action-film previews.

The looks of astonishment and confusion on the faces of the gathered were most rewarding. One attendee had a dB meter and it was hitting 115 DB quite often. Even I was amazed as I’d never pushed my Caterthun 8 loudspeakers so hard. They sounded perfect; they didn’t screech or show signs of compression, neither did they under perform or seem lacking in any way.

To close, we took some music requests, and one of them included a beautifully recorded acoustic bass (to be featured in our test-track listing!!!).

As the Caterthun 8 loudspeakers were reproducing the complicated fretwork of the bassist (again at very high dB levels), the air in the room seemed to go solid and it was as if the bassist was playing ME !!

I was pulled and punched and thumbed and damped. It knocked the breath out of me. Wow, what an experience. Loudspeakers you can feel in a package you can live with.

We used;

    * DPA CA1 pre-amp
    * DPA SA1 power amp
    * DPA Minuet DAC
    * DPA Mains Conditioner
    * Caterthun Classic loudspeakers
    * Caterthun 8 loudspeakers
    * Alacrity Audio loudspeaker stands for both

All in all, a great success in a great venue. Thanks to everyone who came.
Come and listen at Audio World 14 at the Holiday Inn in Brighton, 29 – 30 March.
